THE Tips For Keeping Your Laundry Space Organized & Safe for Kids

What’s worse than doing endless loads of laundry? Searching through cluttered cabinets trying to find a small bottle of specialty spot treatment. Knocking over a half-closed bottle of detergent in the process. Pausing to clean up the mess. Forgetting what you were looking for in the first place. Repeat cycle.

Here’s the thing: Laundry is a task that many of us do on a weekly basis, oftentimes more, especially as moms. So why make it harder than it has to be?

Whether it’s a wide-open space or a tiny corner set-up, any laundry room can benefit from the functionality and look of a well-organized and safe system for the following reasons:

1. It provides efficiency for a more streamlined and manageable routine (aka less time spent doing laundry!)

2. It transforms a cluttered mess into a polished space that you can be proud of

3. It ensures that cleaning products, such as liquid laundry packets, are stored in a place that is out of reach where kids can’t access them

Because of this, we recently partnered with American Cleaning Institute and their Packets Up! campaign to show you that creating a laundry room that’s efficient and beautiful can also be safe and kid-friendly.

The first step? Take stock of your items and create categories. Is it just detergent, dryer sheets, and stain removal? Or does this space also store paper towels, ironing supplies, sewing kits, and extra hangers? This all depends on the amount of usable space and your routine.

Next, go through and decide if anything can be tossed or consolidated. This will give you an idea of what type of storage solution will work best for the items.

In general, opaque bins with handles are a smart option for moms because they are durable, can be easily wiped down, can be accessed and returned to a higher shelf, and in the absence of a cabinet, helps to keep cleaning supplies safely out of sight. (FYI: To create a stylized look, all the bins should be the same style. Cohesion is key!)

We love utilizing clear canisters and jars—but only when it is safe to do so.  In the case of the laundry room,  we only used jars for items that aren’t a safety risk for curious kids. Any cleaning product item, such as liquid laundry packets, should be stored in the original packaging with the safety label intact. The product packaging is designed with safety in mind, so when you’re finished using the product, secure it in a cupboard out of sight and out of reach of young children.

Now for the finishing touch—adding your labels! Labeling is the key to long-term maintenance. Not only does it help you find what you need at a glance, but it doubles as a guilt mechanism if you try to return something where it doesn't belong. A win-win!

Even with all the benefits, we can’t promise that a laundry room makeover will make you love doing laundry. To us, that seems impossible, but every little bit helps—especially if it means saving you time and keeping your kids safe!

*In partnership with the American Cleaning Institute, we'll be giving away a virtual laundry room makeover consultation...for free! All you have to do is follow @thehomeedit and @americancleaninginstitute and tag some of your friends in the comment section. The giveaway will be open from June 17-19. Check back on Friday—the winner will be chosen at random and noticed by DM. Good luck!
