TIP 1: MATCH YOUR HANGERS
"Matching hangers have changed my life! I'll admit that I'm not the most organized person, so before I started working at The Home Edit, I had so many mismatched hangers. When I swapped to matching ones, my closet instantly looked better and it's not even organized (ha!). It's just such a simple fix that can make a big difference."
-Kenna, Senior Content Coordinator
TIP 2: TRY A 2-TIER TURNTABLE
"There are two types of people in this world: Drawer people and counter people. I'm definitely a counter person. I need to be able to see all my items or else I forget to use them. I have a 2-tier turntable on my countertop that stores all my daily products so everything is within reach. It makes getting ready so much easier while keeping me organized in the process."
-Courtney, Senior Content Manager
TIP 3: INSTALL DOOR UNITS
"Since moving to Nashville three years ago, I've moved around a lot and had to consider which solutions to invest in while renting. Elfa over-the-door units are an amazing way to add temporary storage to any space. I have one in my closet for shoes, one in my pantry for spices and canned goods, and another in my hall closet as a drop spot for sunglasses, sunscreen, and reusable bags. It's easy to install and hooks on the top and bottom of the door, so I can remove it when it's time to move again and use it in my new place."
-Lauren, Project Manager
TIP 4: FIND YOUR MULTIPURPOSE MVPS
"I love multipurpose products that can be used anywhere and last forever. The XL Bins from our Walmart collection are great to have on hand because they can rotate to fit your needs and can store just about any item. In my apartment, I used one to store party supplies in my kitchen around the holidays. Now, the same bin holds all the backstock toiletries in my bathroom. I also have one in my closet to store folded jeans! The Large Drawers (also from our Walmart collection) are another organizing MVP you can rotate throughout the home and stack to save space without losing access to your items."
-Sumner, Director of Product Development
TIP 5: PREP A PURSE PHARMACY
"I keep the pill organizers from our iDesign collection in every bag. One for kids and one for adults. It's been a game changer on the go."
-Krista, Chief Operating Officer
TIP 6: DON'T SKIP THE EDIT
"Always start a project by pulling everything out to see what you have. It's a lot easier to purge and categorize this way. You may be surprised to find items you thought you lost or completely forgot about and probably don't need in the first place. Once you eliminate the unnecessary clutter, you can make space for the things that you actually use and have easier access to them."
-Indigo, Project Manager
TIP 7: MAKE ROOM FOR BROOMS
"As a city dweller who's lived in small spaces for several years, I've never had a designated cleaning or utility closet. My mops and brooms are stored in the hall closet next to jackets and other items, and by store, I mean propped haphazardly in the corner. That was until I tried the new Broom Closet Organization Strip from our Walmart collection. It sticks to the wall (or a door) with adhesive strips and includes hooks and grippers to keep mops and brooms off the ground and easy to grab. It's customizable, so I can move the placement of the hooks if needed."
-Rachel, Brand Marketing Consultant
TIP 8: STORE MORE, POUR MORE
"Cereal canisters are for more than just cereal. I use them for snacks, rice, lentils, and even birdseed! The pour spout really comes in handy to avoid any spills."
-Heather, Producer
TIP 9: STORE MORE ON YOUR CABINET DOOR
"I always recommend iDesign Affix Adhesive Bins as a convenient solution for creating more vertical storage in smaller spaces, like a cabinet door. They come in three different sizes, so I've used them to store anything from products under the bathroom sink to spices in a kitchen cabinet to sunglasses on a closet wall—the list goes on! When storing items that tend to fall over or need to live in separate subcategories, I place a few of our Tall Bin Organizers inside to contain everything securely."
-Jenn, Senior Project Manager
TIP 10: HARNESS HIDDEN STORAGE
"If you have oversized items cluttering your space that don't fit nicely on a shelf, consider incorporating a Poppin Bench. It's a dual-purpose solution that features hidden storage underneath the seat and is highly versatile. I've used them to store everything from yoga mats and workout equipment in an extra guest room, stuffed animals and large vehicles in a playroom, blankets in a living room, and backpacks and to-go bags in a mudroom area."
-Emily, Training & Development Manager
TIP 11: STORE SMART
"If you are looking for a cost-effective solution to keep smaller items from getting lost in the mix and are available in multiple shapes, sizes, and colors, go with Smart Store Cups. I use them for socks in my toddler's dresser drawer, tools in the garage, tampons and travel toiletries under the bathroom sink, pet supplies in the entryway, and office and craft supplies in a cart. I recommend these to everyone!"
-Susan, Facilities Manager
TIP 12: START SMALL
"If the idea of organizing seems overwhelming (or even if you enjoy it but your schedule is busy), start small and go one space at a time. When you try to organize too many areas at once, you are much more likely to lose steam halfway through. We always recommend that people start with a simple drawer or small section of a larger space, like a shoe wall in a closet. Once you've finished, you'll be so excited and inspired that you'll want to move on to the next small project. Also, remember that in the organizing process, there will always be a point where it has to get worse to get better. The only way out is through, so don't get discouraged by the temporary mess!"
-Christina, Senior Project Manager
TIP 13: CONQUER THE CORNERS
"I live in a studio apartment with many corner cabinets, and finding storage that fits the space can be tricky. Recently, I discovered that the removable insert inside The Home Edit Divided Turntable is the perfect triangle shape to maximize those corners. I especially love using them in the bathroom to keep all my categories together. It also makes for easy restocks."
-Lee, Project Manager
TIP 14: RISE AND SHINE
"If you turn an acrylic riser upside down, it's the perfect solution for keeping anything from yoga mats to gift wrap rolls in place!"
-Shaina, Director of Brand Standards
TIP 15: STACK & STORE IN STYLE
"These stackable jewelry drawers have been a game-changer in my routine. It allows me to see everything I own in one place as I'm getting ready, so I don't waste time digging around for things. My twins are toddlers, so I need all the help I can get, haha! Plus, I love the design—it's so chic and looks great on my vanity. The linen lining keeps things from shifting around, and there are different compartments to separate smaller pieces by category and size, which is nice. 10/10 gold stars!
